OPEN TO ALL
It hadn't taken long for Xahra to find the section of the tower dubbed restaurant row. Bars and Restaurants of all types dotted the heavily trafficked promenade as the masses made their way to a quick drink or meal while waiting on their commercial flight. Xahra didn't have anywhere in particular to be, and after being jabbed with what felt like every syringe on the planet, she'd needed a drink. Good thing for her, that her upper arms were still natural, otherwise she shuddered to think where'd they'd have put the autoinjectors.
She'd found a nice bar called "Cables" a bit out of the larger traffic pattern, and found a nice table where she could put her back up against a synthcrete pillar. Old habit, keeping her back to the wall, but one that had kept her alive. She wore her usual red dress shirt with her blazer draped over the back of the chair. Around her left upper arm she wore a blue biotracker. It wasn't thick enough to stop her from putting on her jacket, but annoying enough none the less, and served to identified her as a member of the Aegis Settlement Program. If there was one thing the Corps loved it was marking their territory. She'd also been told not to take it off for more than 15 minutes or security would be dispatched. Not that she had any intention of backing out of the deal now.
Tilting her chair slightly back, she leaned up against the pillar, nursed her second pint of beer, and watched the display of humanity marching by.

Honestly, Varis still couldn't comprehend the idea that her application had been successful. She had been preparing herself for the alternative, not that this job posting was likely to be an opportunity to eat caviar and dine with the upper elite. If there was an upper elite where she was going, they weren't likely to be happy to be there.
After she had been unceremoniously bumped into by the strange guy at Pacha HQ. She clenched her fists, as if she was even remotely capable of getting in a confrontation. Bluff her way to the top, "Excuse me! I ugh..." she looked at him and his sleeked back hair, and his purple and gold suit, and then made the decision that smacking this guy here would not be good for her career. She mumbled incoherently, adjusted his coat collar with her gloved hands, before running to a bathroom where he couldn't follow, and waited for an obscene amount of time to pass before looking out again. Then of course, she got the news.
What am I getting into, she pondered for the briefest of moments. There was no point pondering, she wasn't given enough clearance to know anything yet, other than the fact that they'd slapped a red armband around her jacket sleeve. It was remarkably uncomfortable to walk around like a branded piece of cattle, with sideways glances from every second person she passed. No instructions, no mission briefing, just a quick trip out to this here spaceport with the advice, Don't bother running.
There was likely a tracker in the armband, at least that was her own interpretation of the thing. That, and the faint, yet discernible flashing light in the centre of the band every ten seconds that made her feel as though every one of her vitals, and what she was saying and doing, was being monitored remotely. Given half an hour, she could probably find a way to silence the recording device, if there was one, but she didn't want to disappear just yet, Wait until we get to where we are going, then we can make a plan.
The port was fairly busy, and it made her uncomfortable. She had spent years in a small group of often changing faces, often spending large periods of time by herself. The crowds were unsettling to her, and it felt as if everyone was watching her. Judging her. Measuring her up to some sort of imperialist standard. Although she had picked her own wardrobe, it felt remarkably 20th century compared to the industrial and slimming garb that the others were wearing.
It also didn't help, that within a few moments of her arrival, she was completely and utterly lost. Wandering for what might have been hours, or minutes, she stumbled upon a bar, so she ducked inside. Time to sit, consider, reorient within this place before she got any more lost. She approached the bar, and the machine behind it tilted its head up and down, scanning obviously for some type of ID, before pouring a large dark sludge like drink and placing it on the bench in front of her.
"PACHA STANDARD BREW," it commented, before pushing off to serve another patron. It was a tiny glass, what they would have called a Handle back home, but its contents seemed rather heavy. She lifted it up, took a swig, and gagged slightly. It was thicker than it had any right to be, the same consistency of milk when it had been sitting out for a day or two. Otherwise, it had no taste. None at all, like is was just thick sludge like air the colour of tar. The second taste was easier, now she knew what to expect, but no less tasteless.
She took a seat near another woman, this one with bright red hair and eyes to match. Was it customary to introduce yourself here, or did you just sit in silence. Social cues weren't her strong suit, so she instead attempted to break the ice in a manner which, if they chose not to respond, would not make her look like an idiot, "This is obviously an aquired...' pause, '...taste. Are you coming, or going?"

The Red biotracker was the first thing that caught her attention as the purple haired girl entered the bar, and she couldn't help but think, of all the Bars on the level the Pacha lackie had to walk into mine. Not that she had any sense of corp pride or loyalty of any kind. She may have been with Aegis, but it was just a job, a means to an end. So, she held no animosity towards the girl.
Absentmindedly she reached to tap her left holster, which only served to remind her that they'd made her leave the things in the locker in her room. Walking around with visible weapons in a commercial starport makes people nervous, they'd said. All she could think was, frak em if they couldn't take a joke.
Her attention was drawn back to the other girl as she moved closer, sighing slightly when her hopes for the girl to go elsewhere were dashed. Even worse, the girl was trying to make conversation? Well, in for a penny, in for a pound.
"Are you coming or going," the girl said, to which Xahra replied by taping her own blue armband. "Cattle, same as you," she remarked back with a slight hint of a Germanic accent, then looked on in horror as Varis actually drank the swill they'd given her. "Oh no, that won't do."
Waving over one of the actual servers, Xahra pointed at the 'Pacha Standard,' "Get the girl a real drink and put it on my tab, poor thing will probably be dead three steps onto Astreus, might as well have a real beer before that."

Dead three steps into Astreus? She bit her tongue, not worth getting into an argument about her capabilities three seconds after the woman had offered to buy her a real drink. How was she to know that she'd survived in the wilderness of Australia, home of some of the planets most deadly creatures, quite fine and hadn't died even once. Well, there was the time with the dugite that had been a bit sketchy, but other than that, things were good. She barely had a scar from that one either.
"Appreciate it," Varis said, as the server took the 'drink' and replaced it with something that actually resembled a liquid. This one was... bitter, and tasted like someone had dunked a car tyre and a leather boot into some bore water, put it in a fridge and served it as a delicacy. However, without giving a grimace of disgust, Varis smiled and took another deep drink, unpausing, "Much better. I appreciate that, my contract doesn't pay for another month. I'm stuck with whatever rations that Pacha deigns to... ration me."
I could buy a decent drink, if I was allowed to access my credits... she cursed to herself, "If we cross paths on Astreus," whatever that is, "then I'll owe you one. My name is Varis. You probably noticed that I'm a Pacha contract - I take it you're Aegis?"

Jaximus threw a glance over his shoulder, the small squeak of excitement let forth from the woman combing his interest back to her. His eyes darted up and down her frame and his lips split into a rather cocky grin. "You're excused." he said gruffly, his pace not even so much as slowing down as he heads for the door, his hat coming into it's resting place as he breaks the barrier back into the crowded street.
He looked around, all the signs above the walk paths lit up even though it was mid day. He wondered if these signs still remained filled with neon or if one of the big daddy corps have came up with some new essence to achieve the same result, only cheaper.. at the end of the day, it was still pretty colors, a stark contrast against the dull industrial colored buildings. He hobbled off towards the lounges in the town, knowing down this row a man, woman, or bot could find anything they need, be it love, food, or even housing in a box!
Jax mingled his way down the crowded sidewalk, which in a truthfulness overtook a good portion of the roadway, the population blocking an ambulance trying to creep down the road, piloted by AI who are programed to only help, not hurt. The med bus had its lights whirling around and would beep its siren every now and then, trying to get people to move out of the way, but almost no one seemed phased as they continued down their path, the ambulance right behind them slowly rolling along. Ducking into a near by doorway, he also found himself standing in the premises of Cables, the hot and exciting entertainment place, where you could find multiple levels of activities taking place, that is, as long as you have the clearance for it.
The man quickly caught the outstanding hair scheme from the woman who bumped into HIM earlier and decided to take a seat close to her at the bar, just across the isle from her table she shared with what appeared to be a friend. He drug himself through the restaurant, procuring a cigarette and lighter from his vest pocket before he made it to his final destination. He pulled out a tightly rolled wrapper, stuffed with tobacco and branded with Pacha's signia, striking the lighter three times before finally getting a steady flame from it. He held it to the end of the cancer stick and took a long drag in, creating a buzzing hot cherry on the end. He flipped his lighter top closed and stashed his small supply setup before raising a hand lazily, hailing a waiter over to order himself, and unbeknownst to him, the woman with purple hair, a second drink! Everyone loves margaritas, right?

Robbie was starving and looking for a place to dine out with a view. That's how he ended up in this little establishment with the other settlement enlistees. He wore his red armband without complaint, unfazed by the monitoring at this point, his mind filled to the edges with anticipation for what was ahead. He grabbed a seat at one of the tables just behind the patrons at the bar and pulled up a hollow-vid showing a 2 minute replay of one of the new world documentary shorts that translated into bragging rights and recruitment material for the megacorps. He watched Pacha and Aegis indiscriminately, wanting to know everything he could get his hands on before actually getting his hands on anything the other side of this one-way-trip. Anything on the unclassified networks that could be played outside of a secure facility anyway.
There were things happening off planet that was making its way back to Earth in these docu series; but they weren't releasing THOSE videos to the public. None of the corps invested were sure just yet how to package and profit off the strange 'alterations' some of the settlers were experiencing. Robbie had heard whispers at work, but had very little access to the proof. He couldn't wait to get some first hand experience with that too.
A waiter working its way through the packed pub to serve a two-toned haired gentleman a drink was bumped in the process, no fault of his own, and spilled the mans order all over Robbie's head. His bright ginger locks, particularly the bangs he wore long in the front, wilted and hung wet and heavy in his face. That got a reaction from the crowd. Humanity was and would always be a vicarious species. He turned off his hollow-vid and exhaled long and slow before pushing the wet hair away from his face and licking his lips.
"....I'll have what he's having," Robbie said after a taste; interrupting the waiters apologies and dismissing the issue overall. Realizing that he had no intention of making a scene or starting a fight, the onlookers went back to minding their own business for the most part. "I could use a towel too," he added as the waiter hurried off to set things right. At least this beverage didn't stink... Robbie thought; considering it would linger on him for the rest of the night.

The more red armbands that appeared in the place, the crazier it seemed to get, she briefly hoped that her comment about the purple haired girl getting killed would have earned her a beer in the face and she'd have been able to excuse herself to go change. Instead the girl continued to talk to her, so she took another swig of her pint and resigned herself to the conversation.
"Not sure pay is going to matter much on Astreus, what with the whole not coming back thing. Though I suppose it's in our nature to want to hoard some kind of currency." There was always a more than likely chance that Astreus already had a black market of some kind set up, but black markets usually depended on the seller wanting something, and it wasn't like there was a shopping plaza waiting for them to spend their paychecks.
"If we cross paths on Astreus," the girl said, "then I'll owe you one. My name is Varis. You probably noticed that I'm a Pacha contract - I take it you're Aegis?"
Xahra nodded, crossing her ams, "Yeah, not sure if crossing paths once we get on planet will be a good thing, but who knows." she offered a slight shrug. "and yeah, I'm Aegis. Names Xahra. Procurement Specialist. Seems like there's gona be a lot of Pacha Settlers on this run," she gestured around, intending to change the subject away from where everyone's loyalties lay.

Matthias couldn't believe he was actually approved to come on this little horse and pony show heading off world. Then again, he was logical and to the point with the system in the booth. They didn't have any real reason to keep him Earth bound. Then again, he did just lose his whole squad not too long ago. Maybe they wanted to get rid of him and avoid any embarrassing questions.
Don't sweat the small stuff, Matt. And everything is small stuff.
Walking along the space port, he found his way to the shops and restaurants, finding some bar named "Cables" and for an unknown reason, he felt drawn to that one. Walking inside, he surveyed the area, his blue cybernetic eyes glowing from within his hood. His head moved from left to right, scanning everyone and assessing them as a threat or not, more so out of habit than anything sinister. His blue armband marking him as an Aegis Settler stood out against the black of his shirt sleeve. He saw at least one other blue armband, and several red ones.
Great, Pacha people. Well, thankfully I don't have to kill any...today.
Moving to the bar with a distinct walk caused by his cybernetics, he motioned for a beer. He'd keep it to one, as he wanted to keep his wits about him. This was all hostile territory as far as he was concerned. Not many people like having cybernetic killers in their midst.

Varis went to reply, when another drink landed in front of her. This one in a fancy glass, and looked exotic. It looked far nicer, and far tastier than the one she had in her hand, but... her instincts told her it was a trap. She didn't mind the drink bought by Xahra, she'd witnessed the server bring that to her, but the other one... quietly, and subtly, she surveyed the room for the one that had bought it for her.
She didn't have to look far before her eyes fell across the strange slicked back hair guy from Pacha. Great, she thought fighting back the incredible instinct to roll her eyes, this creep is either following me, or managed to get assigned to the same project. Either way, great. Does that make the drink safe though? She turned back to Xahra, as if nothing had happened. There was the faint sound of toppling glasses, and some whispered apologies, as more people entered into the bar. Some dolt was wearing the drink identical to the one in front of her. She smiled faintly.
"What gave it away," she said, brushing her armband lightly as if a fly had landed on it, downing as much of the beer at once as she could. "Hail Pacha," she gave a slight chuckle, "or whatever it is they say. I'm fairly new to this Pacha loving business, so please don't be offended if I'm not towing company line yet. Its not like a lot of us are here by choice. Some might be, I suppose. No offense if you are, won't hold it against you. Its not like the options around here are exactly gold standard."
"Its probably early," Varis commented, "flight doesn't leave for a couple of days, and you and I obviously have nowhere else to be. I'm sure you'll meet up with some friends sooner or later" she finished the drink off, licked her lips and placed the pint glass gingerly on the table, "I haven't attended any of my briefings yet, so I have no idea what I'm walking into. They don't tell you much about Astreus in New 'Stralia, even if I'd cared enough to listen. News broadcasts didn't make it to my little corner of paradise, so I'd say I'm more than a little out of the loop," she lifted the other glass. It didn't smell like old boots, at least. She sipped it gently.
She lifted up her glass, "Hopefully the next time we meet, I can buy you a drink," glancing at the Xahra's empty holsters, "that's if you haven't shot me first. Good to know what we're all up against," she winked, "Here's to strange circumstances."

Jax let out a faint huff, a quick expression of joy to be hidden amongst the small uproar created over the poor fellow's impromptu shower. With a quick shake of his head, he waved down the frantic waiter who seemed to be pulled this way in next, being asked for towels and scurrying to clean up the mess! "I'd still like my drink!" barked the boy, hoping for the man to hear him over the ruckus, only to add "make it double!" for the gentlemen in wet yellow locks, sitting just a tad bit away.
Jax turned to his new found ally, denoting his observation of the mans armband with a slight nod in the gentleman's direction. "Pacha, eh? Seems everybody is rolling with the boys in red today. Seen more in this bar than, well, I have all day! What brings you into the lovely arms of this corporation?" He threw a glance over his shoulder with the two woman in the corner, the red head looking more delinquent as the moments pass, but perhaps he was judging a book by their cover.. He spent an additional moment checking out the woman's meek approach to the Marg, but come on, who DOESN'T like margaritas?! It's the best thing this place has going for it, damned it all!
"Yeah, myself, I'm here for to help forward supply at the settlement, request additional rations, etc...I guess what I'm saying is, if you need anything - ANYTHING at all - come give me a holler." Jax replied in the direction of the blondie, his eyes still attentive on the woman in purple, not realizing that he may have just replied before the man even got a chance to speak. Ah, you'll have that on these big jobs.

She was still surveying the crowd while the girl prattled on about this and that. Hail Pacha, like this was some old tv series about good vs evil. Though, she supposed the megacorps were as close to supervillains as one could get. She continued to survey the people walking in and out, noticing more armbands. Had she accidently stumbled into the Astreus meeting club?
Some guy got a drink spilled on him, someone else bought Varis a drink, it was all rather blase. Maybe after this she'd see if the Aegis facilities here had a shooting range. Nothing like the smell of gunpowder to end a nice afternoon. "No one really knows much about Astreus other than it being better than here, but give it a few millennia and you won't even know the difference. Least I'd be willing to wager. All I can tell you for sure is that it's the wild west out there. Untamed nature, beasts big as a truck that can tear you in half, sentient foliage. But it's got air you can breathe without a mask, and a sky where you can still see the stars at night. I imagine it'll take some getting used to not having a permanent layer of smog hanging overhead."
Maybe there was more to say on the matter, but it was about that time that she noticed Matthias saunter in and sit down at the bar. Even worse, he was wearing a blue armband. 'dung,' she thought to herself 'the hell is he doing here.' If rumors were to be believed, he'd slaughtered a small town and managed to lose his whole team in the process. They traveled in similar circles, but she liked to think she had a bit more finesse.
Course the voice in the back of her head reminded her that she wasn't really one to talk. Tallen commando's had killed her entire syndicate, and now she was leaving the planet to get them off her back.
"I doubt you'll be buying me a drink on planet," she finally replied, "but I'm not the one you gotta worry about shooting you," she gestured towards Matthias at the bar. "Free little word of survival advice. You see that guy anywhere in your vicinity you haul your pretty little asteroid back to your Pacha masters as fast as possible."

That was mild relief, somehow she had thought in amongst all the transfers from New 'Stralia, that she had missed out on some vital information. Whether this Aegis settler was telling her the truth about the matter was another thing - but at this point in time, she didn't have any reason not to trust the information was at least accurate, if at least, not harmful. She tried to imagine a wild west in space, and failed. When you'd stared at open cut mining operations in the south west regions of 'Stralia, the red dirt seeping into your soul, to the proverbial unkempt and untended wilderness of the south coast regions, with its old World War II fortresses, it was hard to imagine anything more untamed. Occasionally she would see these little figurines and posters of another war that had happened in the Stars, men with white helmets and strange people wearing robes, the Star Wars. Was that what Astreus was going to be like?
"To infinity, and beyond," she chimed, another old saying that she'd heard once. It didn't make sense, what was beyond infinity? She turned around to look at the gentleman that Xahra mentioned, her eyes narrowing slightly. He didn't seem that dissimilar to a few of the denizens she'd seen walking around. Distinct walk about them, cybernetics had come a long way, but they hadn't completely 100% replicated human walking. It was a great imitation, but was more methodical, predictable, calculated. She looked back at the red haired woman all the same and gave a thankful glance, "I appreciate the warning, thank you. I'm pretty sure my 'asteriod' will appreciate that advice if I find myself in his company."
Asteriod, seriously. The language was certainly a little different from New 'Stralia. She hadn't even heard the 'c' word yet, and the people hadn't pulled a knife on her, so far so good "I don't know how much field work I'll end up doing anyway. I'm registered as a Biological Scientist, so unless they have me out getting samples or running errands, I imagine I won't be far from base, whatever that means.
"And I've gotten myself out of a scrap or two in my time," she mentioned, trying to humble brag, "mind you, now that the Kangaroo's mutated to be the seven metres tall, it takes a bit of firepower to take them down. I saw one with two tails once, definitely put me straight, you don't hang around for that!" she wasn't sure whether she was being serious now. How much alcohol was in this thing?

Misery does love company, so when the patron who'd lost his drink to Robbie's misfortune started chatting him up, he got up and grabbed the back of his chair, dragging it closer to the other mans table and sat back down at a more conversational distance. They still weren't that far behind the bar and the customers sitting at it, but at least they didn't have to talk around people walking between their two tables.
"Sorry I stole your drink there," he opened with and gave a bit of a gruff laugh. "Me? I've been working for Pacha for a long time. I'm Doctor Robert Puck, biochemical engineer, at your service," he extended a hand for a shake. "It's a pleasure to meet you." He replied after the other man introduced himself as the supply guy. "We'll probably be well acquainted since running the labs requires an ample supply of... well... supplies." Pacha frequently used their orbital launch cannons to send supply capsules over to Astreus. What good fortune to make the acquaintance of someone in the supply chain that he could check in with on their evolving needs once they reached the new world.

Xahra had no idea what a Kangaroo was, but any creature that was 8 feet tall...wait, was Varis getting drunk? Already? Not only was the girl naïve, but she was a lightweight to boot. Xahra couldn't figure out how someone like that could have survived in a third world country like New Australia, though to be fair Xahra couldn't fathom how she'd survived either. It had taken her quite some time to realize that everyone hadn't grown up having to scrap for a bite to eat, or fight for the bed closest to the window.
"Well doesn't look like either of us have anywhere to be anytime soon," she pointed at the launch announcement that had just appeared on the holoscreen. "How about I buy you another drink, maybe something more to your liking?" Xahra offered a smile, but her true motive was to get this girl shitfaced before they called her up to get her injections. A gal had to entertain herself somehow.

Varis smiled a little freer that she would have liked, taking another delicate sip of the margarita. Fruity, sweet, with a touch of sour to mix - certainly nothing like they served back home. Home brew, clear and noxious, often incredibly lethal when mixed by someone who didn't know what they were doing, or extremely watery when there was a miser at the bar. Coming in a variety of colours, most often brown, it was more what she was used to. If it didn't hurt on the way down, what was the point of drinking it. This was nice though.
The announcement was clear, and Varis felt a little. How did she feel about it? Unnerved to be headed out on a one way trip to a distant planet, no hope of ever returning, she supposed. Though there wasn't much left for her there, not once Pacha had finished with decimating every square inch of the continent. It wasn't even fear, or anxiety, she'd long ago given up being scared of what was in front of her, the first days alone in the middle of the desert had done that. You stopped being scared of scorpions after you start needing to eat them to survive.
Anticipation, maybe. It was hard to say, in the last twelve years, waking up was enough of a victory, let alone looking forward to something. Maybe out there, she could be free. Maybe out there, she would end up just as trapped, but with less places to go. A half smile now, a grimace, a sigh, then a smile again, "I've always been fond of a good Gin and water, when you could get a good one. As long as they mix it right - not too much water, nor too little. Just enough. You know what I mean?" she giggled, 'You know what I mean."
She gave a playful slap on Xahra's arm, as if trying to include her in on the joke as she polished off the drink, again a little quicker than she ought, "I couldn't think of anything I'd rather be doing!"
