OPEN TO ALL- "Welcome to Pacha Inc." the voice on the intercom spoke automatically every time someone entered through the enormous front doors. The lobby was as intimidating as it was large. The tall glass windows were shrouded by a variety of plants, and; just to flaunt their wealth, populated by an awestriking variety of colorful and exotic birds. The front desk was nearly hidden behind a row of kiosk forming a kind of privacy fence in an attempt to ward off as much human-to-human interaction as possible by all means necessary. There were actual receptionist behind the desk, but printed in large bold font on a sign in front of their consoles were the words "All Check-ins via the Kiosk. We appreciate Your Visit"
Anyone who approached one of the machines would discover a menu with a list of options. At the very top was the most lucrative of all, the very reason you came here. "Applications for Interplanetary Sponsorship" You tap the touchscreen and the menu shifts to a new set of options to choose from: A) Submit Video Audition B) Schedule Live Audition C) Main Menu.
For those who chose A) The top of the kiosk would open with a mechanical whirling sound, and rising from it a camera and spotlight which stikes brightly and beams down on you where you stand. The kiosk screen gives a large red countdown from the number 3 backwards and then a red circle to signify "recording". That's your cue: what do you do?
For those who chose B) the next available time slot is automatically assigned to them, and they are asked to enter their name identification and to take a seat on one of the booths lining the windows edge where they'll have to wait to be called by name. Looking back over your shoulder you can see how crowded the wait already is, but where in the world wasn't crowded these days?
So what do you choose? Give your best reasons for selection in a video audition in front of all those people... your competition... or take a number and join a long line of contestants waiting to make an impression on the staff in person?

Varis stood at the threshold of the Pasha Incorporated building, struck with a certain sense of awe. Things had moved so quickly in the last few weeks, that the possibility that she would ever have been standing here, at the precipice of a building filled with streak-free polished glass, and manicured plants had never entered her mind. The world, which has always been so much smaller, so much more remote, felt so far away.
It took everything in her being not to pull the hood on her leather jacket over her head, concealing her face from view. It felt almost wrong now, after a decade spent in the reaches, the desolate and empty, to be in a place so secure… and full. Her natural black hair was clean, the purple highlights at the tips no longer faded or uneven, but well presented after a quick industry performed haircut - although the dye had been a home job, done with a do-it-yourself bottle application kit she had asked for.
Even her clothes were new, and clean, not covered in layers of thick red dust. The blue denim jeans she wore were well fitting and still had their shape and colour. It felt odd for the knees not to have large tears, the bottoms greyed and discoloured, with patches and stains over it. Those pants were generally whatever size she could find, usually made for men, and seven times her size. Sometimes she was lucky to find a pair that didn’t have hi-viz tape sewn across the knees as well, meaning she wouldn’t need to spend the night unstitching those so she couldn’t be easily spotted.
“Quality Never Goes Out Of Style,” she muttered to herself, taking a few more steps across the glossy floor, trying to figure out her next steps. That has been something her father had used to say, a saying from a simpler time. Her Grandparents used to talk about the days back when life was simpler, when you could go down to the local Coles or Woolworths for groceries, or stop for a meal at McDonalds. Whatever that was.
She quietly made her way to the kiosk, noting the security cameras. This is, after all, what she was here for. It was either this, or a lifetime in the colonies spent breaking rocks in the prospect of finding the smallest trace of gold or iron. Not that the company hadn’t already already bled Australia dry, but maybe a fragment remained…
The kiosk activated as she approached, with the top most option appearing in bright bold letters. She pulled her hands out of her gloves, and selected the top option, the screen instantly changing, asking a new question.
A) Submit Video Application, sounded straight forward. She had spent plenty of time in her childhood learning through automatic screens provided by Pasha. Many of her lessons were delivered by robotic monotonous voices that gave no option for failure, or room for humanity within it, so that didn’t sound too bad. B) Schedule Live Audition, she took a look at the cue, and instantly dismissed it. C) Main Menu - well obviously not an option for her.
“Video application,” she said, hoping the camera that had thrust itself from the top of the machine would take her command. The screen changed, reflecting herself. Showtime, she guessed.
“Hello,” she said somewhat awkwardly, giving a slight pause as if someone was going to respond. She carried on, “I am Varis Allaria, born in the western region of the Australian continent. Daughter of Bravo Allaria, Senior Superintendant of the Pasha Incorporated Western Ore Project 1153. I am here under the authority of the Pasha Delegate from Sydney Pty Ltd (subsidiary of Pasha Inc.), to put forward my eligibility in the Interplanetary Sponsorship.
“I was given a Pasha Inc formal education, specialised in Biological Science, and Computer Science through the Pasha Learning Platform. I am uniquely qualified to assist in studying foreign and unusual biological specimens, fully trained in laboratory procedures. I am able to program and control most basic and intermediate systems, and have been able to bypass critical systems to engage secondary and emergency systems.”
What a creative way to highlight her skills as a thief, and code breaker, but what would it matter to them, “I am only 27 years old, meaning I am young enough to travel to any interplanetary system. I have no living,” she briefly considered, her runaway father wasn’t likely to count as living relative? He hadn’t been seen for almost twelve years, “relatives, or bonds, making me uniquely qualified to start a sponsored journey somewhere else.
“It couldn’t be worse than this planet,” she added finally, as a countdown started to appear on her screen, “Thank you, please consider my applicat— “
PLEASE STEP AWAY FROM THE KIOSK, large words immediately displayed. She did so, quickly, YOU WILL BE NOTIFIED OF YOUR SUCCESS SHORTLY. THANK YOU FOR VISITING PASHA INC. GOODBYE.
She turned around and looked at the entrance. What now?

The boy sat outside of the large developmental building, it's glistening outer-layer reflecting the neon lights of the stores surrounding it. He kicked lazily with his feet back and forth, the trash can he was posted on complaining in a sequence of beeps and low-humming alarms; it's small infrastructure did not care for the extra weight that found its way upon the dumpster. Jax watched as a particular woman found her way inside the automatic doors before stopping in her tracks, as if the limited-navigational placement director gave up, that was, if she had one. He shook his head to himself and pushed his body to his feet, swaggering over towards the door. His attire was rather swanky today, his rather important interview was up and coming and he was dressed to look the part! He found himself a well fitting suit, dawning colors of purple and gold - displaying the financial cost of such attire in the pigment variations, his father told him stories of the olden days, how men with money dressed. He kept his hair pulled back, and his hands were fleshed in a set of brilliant white cashmere gloves without a smudge of dirt upon them! His shoes even shined up nicely, a set of bold dress shoes tanned black and polished to a sheen with a small lift in the rear, clacking as he walked across the perfect floor.
With his hand shoved in his overcoat pocket and his hat in hand out of 'respect', he knew he'd be seen as a non-threat, the fancy door setup including a threat detection system would find no evidence for alarm on his being, allowing him to meander over to one of the kiosks. He lifted a hand out of his pocket as he reached out and touched the screen, working through a small drop down menu like the rest of the folk in the building. His options were slim though straight forward. He chose the first option that came up with repetitive tapping on the screen as if it would speed up the process, quite clearly annoyed by the situation or perhaps the lag on the server side.
As the glass monitor distorted into his own visage and lit up a small red light, Jax smiled smugly, and threw up two fingers into a peace symbol. "Name's Jax, you already knew that though, after all, you sent the surveillance bot to my place...surely you must know of my exquisite skills if you have interest in me, otherwise, why bother bringing me here for an application?" He let the air stagnant for a moment, his face showing some sort of slight burden. "Anyways, you've watched me long enough, you know I can get what you need, and I can run a business and create profit.." He leaned in towards the screen, covering his mouth from the other peoples view. "Because that's our common goal, to make money! There's a long list of things I could acquire for the special needs of the settlement, and when I'm not hunting down fine goods, I could always offer to manage the trading post, after all, if the income and outgoing of goods falters in anyway, it will surely be felt back here on earth - besides, the unknown is kind of my specialty, there may be something out there, extremely valuable!" He pulled away and stated his sector and housing location, turning around to leave before the recording was even finished, making sure to take one of his business cards and rub it on the screen, using the static to hold the lightweight card there for the next patron before he trotted off, though in his haste, ending up bumping into the woman with purple hair.

He almost forgot, how could he forget? Robbie rushed through the crowd milling about in the city, pushing his way past shoulder to shoulder masses moving toward the public transit that he was moving away from. "Oh, sorry... sorry... Ooph...C'mon!" He said a little exasperated after someone shoulder checked him harder than was really necessary. He tried to make himself smaller as he swam upstream, pulling his shoulders forward and tucking them in as best he could. He wasn't by any means that big of a guy, he felt rather average at 5 feet 11 inches tall, but he was somewhat broad shouldered and athletically built. Against the odds, he pushed his way through the foot traffic all the way to the front doors of the Pacha Inc. HQ and practically stumbled inside with a sigh of relief.
The lobby was massive, something he'd be frozen stiff by if it were his first time here, but the truth was, he'd clocked more hours in this building than he liked to recount. He'd "made it" as far as most were concerned considering his role in the modern science and medical fields, but his busy body brain wasn't satisfied knowing there was an entire extraterrestrial planet out there full of matter he'd never get to experiment with here. How could he call himself the best, if he accepted the limitations of just one planets biochemical agents in the pioneering age of an intergalactic era?
Uh uh. Not this guy. Not this doctor.
He smoothed down the wrinkles in his clothes. He planned on coming in earlier to submit his application before meeting with the Director of the stemcells & practical cloning division... you know... since he had to come in anyway. He preferred to be out in the field, but when new projects were green-lit and complex biotech needed streamlined, coming into headquarters was unavoidable.
He just hoped his application wouldn't also make him late to todays meeting as well. He put a little hustle back in his step as he beelined for one of the kiosk. There was no time to wait in line for an in-person interview so he elected to make a recording entry. The camera rose, the spotlight struck brightly in his face, bleaching him in an unflattering overhead light and the screen shifted into record mode.
"Ahem," Robbie cleared his throat. "I'm doctor Robert Puck, Lead BioChemical Engineer here at Pacha Inc. HQ; currently assigned to the S&PC Division." He paused but only briefly before continuing. "I'm applying to the Settlement program to provide invaluable service in analytical and experimental research toward micro and macro biochemical new-matter applications as an expert in field and lab studies. I reassure you that having me on site will provide many advantages when it comes to acquiring and understanding alien material to include figuring it out faster than anyone else in my field. and.." Just then it occurred to him the time and he felt a jolt of urgency. "yea. Thank you for your consideration. bye!"
He quickly exited the kiosk station and made his way through the scanners toward the employee lift and onward to his meeting that was due to start. right now.
